Breakfast
Of all the meals that glad my day
My morning one’ the best;
Purveyed me on a silver tray,
Immaculately dressed.
I rouse me when the dawn is bright;
I leap into the sea,
Returning with a rear delight
To honey, toast and tea.

My appetite was razor edged
When I was in my prime;
To eggs and bacon I was pledged…
Alas! The March of Time;

For now a genial old gent
With journal on my knee,
I sip and take with vast content
My honey, toast and tea.

So set me up for my delight
The harvest of the bee;
Brown, crispy toast with butter bright,
Ceylon – two cups or three.
Let others lunch or dinner praise,
But I regale with glee,
As I regard with grateful gaze
Just honey, toast and tea. - Robert Service

2. Read the passage given below. (12 marks)
1. Decision-making is a very vital part of our lives. This is because what we are today is largely a result of the decision we took in the past. Similarly, whatever happens tomorrow will be a result of the decisions we take in the present.
2. It is not possible to reverse the wrong decisions taken in the past but it is possible to train ourselves into becoming a good decision-maker for the future, If we don’t, we’ll end up doing what we’ve always done and thus get what we’ve always got. Philosopher Walter Kaufman has called this Decidophobia.
3. All sorts of decisions- big or small, relevant or irrelevant, conscious or unconscious – punctuate our lives, Sometimes, we don’t even realise we are taking a decision.
4. Those who avoid taking a decision leave everything to chance and float along life with a ‘what will be’ will be’ attitude.
5. To enhance our decision-making, we must, first of all gather as much information as possible about the issue before we make our decision. We might be heading for a failure if our decisions are based on half-baked information.
6. If you have a set of guiding principles for your life, decision-making becomes a lot easier. For example, if you value integrity and honesty and consider them to be of vital importance, you will never waver.
7. Sometimes decisions are very difficult to make, especially when the odds seem to be against us. In this case, giving ourselves a little time to decide wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. Circumstances may change with time and then it may be easier to see which action is more preferable to the others.
8. Being clear about your goals can facilitate decision-making. If we know exactly where we want to be or what we want to do in the next five years or even ten, we will decide to undertake actions, which will lead us to our goals. So outline your short and long-tem goals in black and white,
9. Action is a vital consequence of decision-making. It is the necessary follow-up. Only when we act, will we get a feedback of whether our decision has been correct or not and then we can proceed in a more focussed way. So it is essential to move from the world of thought to the arena of action. (384 words)

English Class XII ‘Passage’ Practice Questions

Class XII English 12 Marks Practice Questions
FACTUAL PASSAGES
1.1. Read the following passage carefully. [12 marks]
[AI, Delhi 1997]

1. So great is our passion for doing things for ourselves, that we are becoming increasingly less dependent on specialized labour. No one can plead ignorance of a subject any longer, for there are countless of-it-yourself publications. Armed with the right tools and materials, newly-weds gaily embark on the task of decorating their own homes. Men of all ages spend hours of their leisure time installing their own fireplaces. Laying-out their own gardens; building garages and making furniture. Some really keen enthusiasts go so far as to make their own record players and radio transmitters. Shops cater for the do-it-yourself craze not only by running special advisor services for notices, but by offering consumers bits and pieces which they can assemble at home. Such things provide an excellent outlet for pent up creative energy, but unfortunately not all of us are born handymen.
2. Wives tend to believe that their husbands are infinitely resourceful and versatile. Even husbands who can hardly drive a nail in straight are supposed to be born electricians, carpenters, plumbers and mechanics. When lights fuse ,furniture gets rickety, pipes get clogged, or vacuum cleaners fail to operate, wives automatically assume that their husbands will somehow put things right. The worst thing about the do-it-yourself game is that sometimes husbands live under the delusion that they can do anything even when they have been repeatedly proved wrong. It is a question of pride as much as anything else.
3. Last spring my wife suggested that I call in a man to look at our lawn mower. It had broken down the previous summer, and though I promised to repair it, I had never got round to it. I wouldn’t hear of the suggestion and said that I would fix it myself. One Saturday afternoon I hauled the machine into the garden and had a close look at it. As far as I could see, it only needed a minor adjustment; a turn of a screw here, a little lightening up there, a drop of oil and it would be as good as new. Inevitable the repair job was not quite so simple. The mower firmly refused to mow, so I decided to dismantle it. The garden was soon littered with chunks of metal, which had once made up a lawn-move. But I was extremely pleased with myself. I had traced the cause of the trouble. One of the links in the chain that drives the wheels had snapped.
4. After buying a new chain I was faced with the insurmountable task of putting the confusing jigsaw puzzle together again. I was not surprised to find that the machine still refused to work after I had reassembled it, for the simple reason that I was left with several curiously shaped bits of metal which did not seen to fit and anywhere. I gave up in despair. The weeks passed and the grass grew. When my wife nagged me to do something about it. I told her that either I would have to buy a new mower or let the grass grow. Needless to say that our house is now surrounded by a jungle. Buries somewhere in deep grass there is a rusting lawn mower which I have promised to repair one day. (539 words)

1.2 Read the following passage carefully. (12 marks)

TOWERING HIMALYSIS POSE GROWING THREAT TO VALLEYS BELOW

1. Mount Everest has long attracted the curiosity of mystics, scientists and thrill seekers, who have for centuries risked their lives to reach the top of its treacherous peak. Their something-deadly adventures have been documented at length in magazines, movies and books around the world. Nut little has been written about how the fabled Himalayas threaten the loves of thousands of villagers who live in the valleys below.
2. Earthquakes rumble through the region as the collision between tectonic plates beneath the continents of Asia and India continue to push the towering Himalayas even higher. Villagers in the foothills also fall prey to frequent avalanches, floods and landslides unleashed by melting glaciers and monsoon rains.
3. Due to global warning glacier-related disasters are to on the rise. The risks increase during the summer months, when warm temperatures and monsoon rains shrink the enormous sheets of ice. And as the warm, wet weather of the Himalayan summer sets in, scientists warm that the chances of disaster grow every day.
4. Glacial melting already has begun to wreak havoc, scientists suspect. Last August in Nepal, during the hottest year on record, landslides and flashfloods left more than 350 dead and 10,000 families homeless. Since 1954, more than 7,000 people have died in 11 major floods in Bangladesh. And this year’s monsoon rains have spread water-borne diseases, fever, influenza and stomach ailments throughout Bangladesh, India and Nepal.
5. One reason for these catastrophes, scientists said, is that Himalayan glaciers – formed by more than 2 million years of snowfall – are receding faster than ever before. As the glaciers continue to shrink, landslides, ice avalanches and floods will increase, scientists warn.
6. ‘Catastrophic natural processes triggered by these glacial changes are responsible for considerable death and destruction throughout the mountains; said Jagdish Bahadur, who wrote a scientific report on the topic. Ice avalanches, which occur when glaciers melt on steep slopes and slide down sparsely vegetated valleys, and landslides, cascading boulders and debris unleashed when melting glaciers dislodge them, have caused hundreds of deaths in the last year alone.
7. But some of the most devastating effects of glacier meltdown occur when glacial lakes overflow. These lakes, which are formed throughout the mountain range by melting glaciers, threaten to flood entire valleys, putting tens of thousands of people’s lives at risk. For decades glacier ice and debris have acted like natural dams to contain the growing lakes. But when melting glaciers feed the lakes faster than water can drain, a violent torrent of liquid and debris often escapes as pressure in the burgeoning lake causes it to literally push past the glacier ice or debris that holds it back. Due to rapid glacial melting, these ‘glacial lake outburst floods’ – once a rarity – have become a frequent occurrence.
8. The chances of a glacial lake outburst increases in the summer, when glaciers melt, and rainwater from the monsoon season adds pressure to the swelling lakes, according to Paul Mayewski, director of the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New Hampshire also say that global warming has accelerated the formation of glacial lakes. The Bulleting of Water and Energy Commission (WEC) has labelled many of these lakes as ‘dangerous’.
9. ‘We’re constantly worried by forecasts about these lakes reputing,” Pemba Sherpa , a resident of Monjo village, which is located close to the high-risk Imja glacier lake, told the World Wildlife Fund. But a lack offending coupled with the difficulty and dangers associated with accessing the glaciers have made it nearly impossible to even monitor them.
10. ‘There is a need to monitor high altitude glaciated regions to understand the natural processes and the magnitude of natural hazards for mitigation measures,” Bahadur stated. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is trying to establish a monitoring system that will warn endangered villagers when a glacial outburst or landslide is imminent. The program also would monitor potentially high-risk lakes, which can be drained to reduce the risk of a disaster.
11. If global warming is the culprit for glacier recession, then the huge masses of ice of the Himalayas will one day melt away altogether. ‘Glaciers’ in the Himalayas are receding faster than in any other part of the world and, if the present rate continues, the likelihood of them disappearing by the year 2035 Is very high,’ stated a recent report by the International Commission for Snow and Ice (ICSI). Though the disappearance of the glaciers would bring an end to the deadly floods and landslides that plague the region, another disaster would follow.
12. Without glacier melt water, many lakes and rivers that serve as lifelines for millions of people could dry up. And about 10 percent of the world’s population – 500 million people – would be at risk at losing their water supply. (792 words)

1.2.1 On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer the following questions as briefly as possible. (9 marks)

(a) Why are the Himalayas prone to earthquakes? (1)
(b) In what ways does the warm and wet weather of the Himalayan summer prove to be devastating? (1)

English Class X Sample Paper 2

Section 1 20 Marks
A 1. Read the following poem carefully: 8 marks
‘IF’ By Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

1.1 The summary of the poem is given below. Complete it by writing the missing word/phrase. (1/2 X 6=3 marks)
The poem ‘If’ is inspirational, motivational, and a set of rules for ‘grown-up’ living. Kipling’s ‘If’ contains mottos and maxims for life, and is also a blueprint for (a)___________integrity, behaviour and self-development. ‘If’ is perhaps even more relevant today than when Kipling wrote it, as an ethos and a personal philosophy.It gives us a (b)___________ to choose between two opposites as one leads us to a (c)_________ and successful path and another makes us weak and hopeless.Rudyard has beautifully expressed how to live a fulfilling and fruitful life in a very(d)_________manner.As he says in the opening of poem that no matter if everyone is doubting us,we must remain calm and try to calm others logically and not by (e)_________ our temper and giving them way to doubt us.It requires a great deal of patience but eventually it will make others (f)__________how strong we are and they would definitely be ashamed of their behaviour.

1.2 Explain the following expressions. (3 marks)
(a) fill the unforgiving minute
(b)nor lose the common touch
(c) yours is the earth

1.3 Pick out (2 marks)
Pairs of rhyming words
(a)
(b)
Synonyms from lines indicated(lines 11-16)
(a)hypocrite
(b)dishonest

A.2 Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: (12 marks)
EV – AN ELECTRIFING THOUGHT
(1) According to a study by the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI), pollution in India could arise to alarming levels by the middle of the century unless urgent action is taken. The group estimates that under current conditions, the suspended particulate matter load in the air would rise to 52 million tons by 2047, up from 17 million in 1997. Methane realized from landfills would increase from 7 million to 39 million tons during the same period. The study cites industrial production, motor vehicles and fossil fuels as the biggest potential contributors. All this would contribute to global warming and acute respiratory problems. One solution to the problem is the increased used of EVs, short for electrically powered vehicles. An EV is an environment friendly vehicle which runs on an electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery. It is nearly noiseless and emits no harmful exhaust.
(2) An average car in India emits 4 g/km of CO and 2 g/km of Nitrogen Oxides and Hydrocarbons. If there were even 40,000 electric vehicles on the road with an annual driving distance of 12,000 km/vehicles, we would reduce 3,000 tons of pollutants.
(3) In effect Electrical Vehicles (EVs) could serve as a stimulant in bringing down pollution. EVs would also help free the Indian government of some of its debts and deficits. 50 per cent of all our oil requirement for transportation is imported, which in numbers accounts for a whopping savings in the foreign exchange of over $24 million on petrol alone. The Petroleum Ministry has estimated that every one-dollar increase in international oil prices translates into a Rs.3, 000 crore (Rs. 30 billion) increase in our oil import bill annually.
(4) EV’s would have an effect on the following: Air and Noise pollution; infrastructure availability; safety; vehicle up gradation; economic resource sustainability. EV’s are easier to service and maintain, and are ideal for “stop-start” city driving conditions. The absence of gears and clutch make them extremely reliable and easy to drive and manoeuvre on congested roads. Research has revealed that regular commuters don’t travel distances more than 30-40 kms a day. With heavy traffic congestion and narrow roads, the average speeds maintained in the city is below 40 km/h. Hence Ev’s with a top speed of 50-75 km/h and a range of 70-100 km meet over 90 per cent of city mobility requirements.
(5) The government needs to push EV sales by providing separate meters for charging EVs and by implementing concessional rates of 50 % tariff for night charging. Reserved and free parking areas for EVs with charging facility and making charging points for EVs mandatory in parking lots of all multi-storey buildings, commercial complexes is a must. Some state governments have been proactively pushing the cause by exempting EVs from road and sales taxes. In addition, the Central government is providing a subsidy of Rs. 75,000 on EVs purchased by its organizations.

2.1 On the basis of your of the above passage, complete the following statements. (8 marks)

English Class X Sample Paper 3

Section A
A1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that following:
1. When television became widespread after World War II, some people thought that television will replace reading. They believed that only a few people might still have any reason to reed and that television would become the number one educational tool.
2. We know now that this prediction was incorrect There has been no decline in most people’s need to read. In fact surveys shows that more books than ever are being sold and the amount of time that the students spend reading is greater than in the days before television. Unfortunately, however, many students are doing little or no voluntary reading. Most of the reading that they do is assigned by their teachers.
3. Just think about how much you read every day in order to complete your school work. How often can you finish an assignment or your home-work without doing any reading? Is there any class in your school that does not require you to do some reading? You have to home-economies -directions and recipes, if nothing else- in shop and auto mechanic classes, in the Science lab and certainly in such courses as Social Studies and English. There is no denying the fact that most academic and vocational courses rely heavily on text books.
4. Not too long ago, a group of teachers made a study of the students and learning problems. A curious fact came out of this study. The teachers discovered that the students who did poorly in subjects such as Maths or Art could still do very well in other subjects. But the students who did poorly hi reading, almost always did poorly in all their others courses.
5. For a while the teachers who made the study were puzzled by this, but they soon had an answer to this puzzle. The teachers looked at the subjects that the students were failing in and discovered that even subjects like Maths and Science were based on reading.
6. Of course there were also other skills involved such as learning to add and subtract in Maths class most of the explanation of how to do things had to be read by the students. Much of the home-work assignments required students to read long sets of directions and tests and, problems in class often involved story problems, problems that were explained in words and had to be read and understood before they could be solved. Your success or failure in these classes will depend of your ability to read the required material. Finally, if you go to college, almost all your study time will be spent reading. You need more and more information and most of this information comes from the printed material you have to read. Even if you could get tapes or movies containing all the information, you need to know that they would not be of much help until and unless you know how to read.
7. Magazines and books may all be on microfilm in the next few years, but they will still have to be read. The same is true of most of what you have to learn in school. Your school is probably not going to throw all printed material out of the window very soon.
8. Success in school courses still depends on an ability to read and those students, who cannot read or at least read well enough to master material, are in trouble.
9. You are moving into a world where eve day more and more technical reading is required Instructions for using applications are becoming more complex. There are written instructions to follow,-for food preparations, traffic signs, travel directions and safety information, all requiring the ability to read. People in modern society read hundreds and even thousands of words every day.
10. Also your ability to get and keep a job is directly related to your ability to read. Even the simplest jobs require some reading ability, and many people advance to more important and better paying jobs by getting additional knowledge and skills through reading. The more spéciailsed the job, the need to read confidently, quickly and efficiently. Doctors read professional journals so that they can use the latest medical knowledge in treating patients while pharmacists have to read the prescriptions the doctors write. Lawyers spend their days rending briefs. The number of semi-skilled and professional occupations that require high reading ability is increasing rapidly. Today a person who cannot read is almost unemployable. (About 750 words)

(a) Based on your understanding of the above passage answer the following questions:

This seemed the most unwise yet.
“Describe your family”…Tom wrote it,
So well, I just had to stop it
Being handed in;-So did my wife.
The details of our family life
Are not such a kind, alas,
That I should want them read in class:
We did not wish the High School staff
To read them for a-lunch-hour-laugh.
We tore it out. I realize
You may think what we did unwise-
But give it your consideration
And please accept my explanation.

For, after all, the work was done
Yours truly,
Harold Honeybun

The Champion
The road was hilly, the wind was strong,
The laddie gallantly struggled along,
With never a glance at the downward way
Where his comrades shouted and laughed in play.
Though he longed to be there and join the sport,
In his brave little heart he crushed the thought.
‘If I went,’ he said, ‘I should certainly rue it,
When you’ve promised a thing, you’re bound to do it.’

The pitch was slippy, the bowling hard.
A weary batsman stood on guard,
He’d come to the field with an aching head.
But the game depended on him, they said.
The sun burned hot on his tired back,
And just for a moment he’d thought he’d slack,
He was sorely tempted to lose a wicket:
‘T would be easy,’ he thought, but it wouldn’t be cricket!’

In life sometimes things won’t go well,
And ‘Duty’s’ a difficult word to spell,
But the fellow who sets before his eyes
A high ideal as the worthiest prize
Will shun the evil and follow the good,
And say to himself, as a brave lad should,
‘It only needs grit, and I must not lack it;
The world’s hard nut, but I mean to crack it!’

English Class X Sample Paper 4

A2.Read the passage given below:
Excuse me,what was that you whistled?
Visitors to the Canary Islands usually go to Tenerife or Gran Canaria. Very few of them go to the island of Gomera, but Gomera is an island with a surprise, because the people there have two languages: Spanish and whistle-language.

It was a great day in Gomera when Colombus arrived with his ships before his first crossing of the Atlantic. Colombus stayed on the island while he bought fruit and cattle and other animals for the voyage. But Gomera has not shared in many of the events of history. It is not easy to land there from the sea, and aeroplanes cannot land at all. Small boats are used to trade with the other islands.

Gomera is the only place in the world which has whistle language. How did it begin? Why did it begin? We cannot answer
These questions because we do not know the complete history of the island. We do know that the Spaniards were the first people to whistle there. Norman seamen had visited the island in 1402.They found tall people with fair hair and blue eyes who called themselves Guanches. They kept cattle for living. they believed that a great king had once become very angry with the Guanches and had cut out the tongues of every man, woman and child. They had to speak without tongues and the whistle language was the result.

We can certainly imagine other reasons for the beginning of the whistle language. Very deep valleys break up the surface of the island. A person on one side of the valley cannot easily shout at a person on the other side. But he can whistle and can be heard from four miles away, and men say that the record is seven miles. The people who live on the island usually have good teeth and this helps them to whistle well. They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers.

We can understand why the Spaniards took the whistle-language from the Guanches.it is very useful on the island, and the Spaniards found that it was very easy to learn. When somebody is hurt or ill, the whistle-language takes the place of the telephone. If the sick person is a long way from town, San Sebastian, boys and men pass the news from one to another. A boy guarding cattle on a hillside whistles to a man fishing from his boat. The last one is able to describe the trouble fully and exactly to the doctor in San Sebastian. People help each other in the same way when a car breaks down or a cattle is lost.

Whistle-language is very useful in work down at the water-front. It is often used to talk to anybody who is more than thirty metres away. People of all ages can whistle. Country people use the language more than people who live in the town. In fact, town people sometimes ‘make mistakes’ and give the hearer the wrong idea. Children learn the whistle language as fast as they learn Spanish. Even the birds on the trees have learnt it. On Gomera, people do not copy the birds: the birds copy people.

Radio and T.V often kill the special ways of speaking in different parts of a country. But on Gomera you are nobody if
you cannot whistle. When the Spaniards arrived the Guanches died out, but they passed on the whistle-language to new comers. Perhaps soon after television arrives on the island, people in the picture will be whistling the news and other facts and opinions.
